Getting to Lumpini Park by BTS/MRT

Lumpini Park is Bangkok’s answer to Central Park — and thanks to the MRT, it’s one of the most convenient green spaces to reach anywhere in the city center.

What it is, briefly

A large public park in the middle of the business district, with a lake, walking and running paths, outdoor exercise areas, and — early in the morning — a genuine slice of local life, from group tai chi to monitor lizards sunning by the water. It’s a good counterpoint to a day of temples and malls.

Picking between the two

On the MRT already? Lumphini Station is about as direct as it gets — the exit opens essentially onto the park’s main entrance.

Coming from the BTS side instead? Sala Daeng works too, though it’s an 11-minute walk rather than a step-off-the-platform arrival — still very manageable, especially along the covered skywalk sections.

Practical tips for the visit

•          Go early morning (before 8am) or early evening for the best atmosphere — that’s when the park is busiest with locals exercising, and the heat is more manageable.

•          The park closes overnight (typically late evening to early morning) — check current hours if you’re planning an evening visit.

•          Monitor lizards are a genuine, harmless park fixture — startling to see the first time, but they keep to the water areas and are used to people.

•          Bicycle rental is available inside the park if you want to cover more ground than a walk allows.

Our take

If your hotel is anywhere near the Silom or Sathorn area, an early morning walk or jog through Lumpini before the day heats up is one of the better low-effort things to do in Bangkok — and the MRT station makes it essentially a no-detour stop if you’re passing through anyway.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is Lumpini Park free to enter? Yes — it’s a public park with no entry fee.

  • What time does Lumpini Park open and close? Generally early morning until around 9pm, though it’s best to check current posted hours, as they can shift.

  • Is the park close to Muay Thai boxing venues? Not anymore — the well-known Lumpini Boxing Stadium relocated away from the park years ago, so don’t plan a stadium visit around this stop specifically.
