Bangkok MRT Orange Line: What’s Coming and When

Bangkok’s rail network keeps expanding, and the next major addition, the MRT Orange Line, is well underway, though still a few years from carrying its first passengers. Here’s where the project actually stands.

What the Orange Line is

A new MRT line running west-to-east across Bangkok, built in two sections:

•          Eastern section: Thailand Cultural Centre to Min Buri (Suwinthawong), including stations such as Yaek Rom Klao.

•          Western section: Bang Khun Non to Thailand Cultural Centre.

Once complete, it will add an entirely new cross-city route distinct from the existing BTS and MRT Blue Line network we’ve covered throughout this series.

Current construction status (as of mid-2026)

•          Eastern section: The more advanced half, civil works are finished, with rail systems roughly 71.6% complete.

•          Western section: Earlier in construction, with civil works around 39% complete and rail systems around 8% complete.

•          Trains: The first trainset finished factory testing in Turkey and is undergoing further trials in Germany before shipping to Thailand, with arrival expected by late 2026. A second trainset is also in testing.

When it will actually open

•          Eastern section: Trial service is targeted for late 2027, with full public service expected in early 2028.

•          Western section: Targeted for 2030.

As with most large transit projects, these are current targets rather than guarantees, infrastructure timelines in any city tend to slip, so treat “late 2027” as the current plan rather than a certainty, especially if you’re trying to plan a trip around it years ahead.

Why this matters even though it’s years away

If you’re planning a short-term trip, the Orange Line won’t affect you yet, build your route around the existing BTS and MRT Blue Line network we cover in our [How to Use Bangkok’s BTS and MRT] guide. But if you’re considering longer-term relocation, property investment, or simply like knowing what’s changing in a city you visit often, the Orange Line will eventually open up new areas of Bangkok to easy rail access that currently require a taxi or long bus ride.

Our take

Don’t plan any near-term trip around the Orange Line, it’s genuinely years from opening even on its current (optimistic) timeline. This is a “worth knowing about, not worth waiting for” piece of infrastructure news; stick with the existing BTS/MRT network for any trip happening before 2028.

Frequently asked questions

  • When will the Bangkok MRT Orange Line open? The eastern section is targeted for trial service in late 2027 and full service in early 2028; the western section is targeted for 2030, both subject to change as construction progresses.

  • Will the Orange Line connect to the existing BTS or MRT Blue Line? Specific interchange details weren’t fully confirmed as of the latest construction updates, check closer to the opening date for confirmed connection points.

  • Should I factor the Orange Line into travel plans now? No, for any trip in the near term, plan around the current BTS and MRT Blue Line network, which is fully operational today.
